One observation I’ve made during my short time in Freemasonry is that each Lodge takes on the character of the sum of its participants. More participants inarguably make for a richer experience for those assembled at our meetings.
Many choose not to advance beyond the threshold of Freemasonry. Some choose not to complete their degrees. Some never show after their degrees. Some are active, and later choose other activities to fill their time. Brothers will come and go. When I joined, there were easily 10 members who were stalwarts of our Lodge who’ve since passed or succumbed to ill health. They would surely choose to attend if they could. Master Masons in good standing who are disillusioned with our Lodge and its character make the choice not to attend.
Not that long ago I was newly raised and inexperienced. Now, incoming members look up to me for guidance. In no time they’ll assume my role, too. I hold Brothers in esteem who arrived before me. I marvel at the trust that new Brothers place in those raised before them. Their new energy. Their zeal. This is how our fraternity proliferates and persists throughout the ages. What a glorious institution. Adding new members is critical for several reasons. Chiefly among them is this new character their presence adds to our collective experience at Lodge.
If you’ve not attended Lodge in some time, I predict you’d quickly observe it’s not the same place as you last left it. Just wait until you meet these new Brothers and see the new character our Lodge has. It’s fleeting. In no time it will change again. Don’t miss it. Freemasons know that private animosities are to be suppressed. Join us again for peace and good fellowship. Add to our collective experience. Rekindle your zeal for Freemasonry. You’ll find it in the Brothers you meet.
